Saturday, March 30, 2013 @ 12:53 AM
Friday, March 08, 2013 @ 1:08 AM
First checkpoint - passed! First hurdle to PhD - checked! =D Passed my comprehensive qualifying exam! My thoughts thus far... It's really not an easy path. Not as simple as an "extended FYP for years". I thought it'd be the same as before, when I chose to stay in the same school and forgo potential opportunities elsewhere - no, it's a totally different playing field. I thought I won't be stretched that much if I chose to stay in the same lab and probably should go for some collaborative project to gain extra exposure - yes, the latter statement still holds true, but no, there's still so much more that I do not know even if I'm at the same place. And I'm glad that the going is tough as I wouldn't know where my limit is without being challenged. When cQE officially started, I was overwhelmed by the tight deadline - it's almost like a sudden death mode. I told myself I just had to manage all my schedule well. During the process, I thought I wasn't going to make it. But I worked even harder in trying to recap all the relevant, four-years-worth undergrad materials that would be necessary for my basic understanding. Halfway through the actual grilling session, I thought that's it, I'm coming back another time. But I knew I couldn't retreat without putting up a fight, and I pressed on. Against the panel which members never fail to give a skeptical, nonchalent looks; sometimes giving false information where you are either so sure of your foundation that you hold on till the end or give in and lose the battle; asking biting questions to crack your argument down to the very last moment where you lose your coherence. I walked out of the room perplexed and unsure of how I performed - but I knew I gave my best and fortunately, it all ended in good news. It's an experience I won't forget and thankfully, I need not go through it again. I chose the programme that forces me to go through an additional qualifying test as I wanted the rigorous training. Yes, I lament on how I should have taken the easy way out during the process. But I'm glad I went down this path. In that short 5 days of preparation, I learnt to be much more critical in my reading rather than just being a passive reader. I do not take in others' claim at face value and learnt to question in a constructive manner. For PhD training, nobody will babysit you and teach what you're supposed to learn. Rather, you'd be thrown into a sea with no support in view and you either learn to swim to shore or drown. It's tough and at times, I question my suitability, but I'm gonna fight on. Moving beyond literature review and fulfilling coursework, I'm about to embark proper on full-time research work. No time for doubts - I can only build up on my understanding, formulate a thesis and push it through the end. I'm leaving this as a note/reminder to myself as I look back in the future. It's probably gonna look like nothing at all when I face new challenges in the future, but it's a memory worth keeping. Keep going! |
