Night in school

Finally submitted our cyclone design report! :D It's my first official project in NUS, and my very first attempt at staying over in school for any academic purpose. Lol apparently our previous design earned great shock from the Prof, and we had to revamp our entire Matlab program, calculations and evaluations. As a continuation of the 9am - 10.30pm session last Tues, 10am - 5.30pm session last Sat, we went on full power from 12pm - 6am (lol) just to get things done. :O

Well, the 12pm experience was totally hilarious though and hopefully, whatever that went on at around 12pm wasn't recalled during the session at 2pm. Anyway, whatever positive that was going on on Monday seemed to be so positive that it's soon turning negative. hahaha. Some of us are so creeped out by ourselves!

On a random note, just heard from 想握你的手 (long time since i last watched this cos my mum wanted to watch the Wife's Revenge - or whatever the title is lol).

"我知道这一切是假的,但我已太入戏了。
I know that it's all an act, but I'm too engrossed in it already."

How does it feel like, to know that everything's fake or a mere figment of your imagination, but you've thought of it so real that you're able to accept the fictitious aspect of it all and continue deluding yourself consciously? You wish to believe that it's all real and you're living through it as though it's a reality; only thing is that, it's all a fake. Interesting.

Anyway, we had our fair share of fun - the electricity that suddenly died on us and we were busy trying to troubleshoot to find the source of error, the door that locked on us while in the tutorial room which miraculously opened somehow and the helpful seniors who were about to call for help, the mac food that accompanied us for many of our meetings (though we din really have much of a choice either), the walk back to hall on a nice, peaceful and cooling night in school, the supper/drinks enjoyed in the kitchen where we were all working on our laptops, the random people passing by and exclaiming 'still doing project at such an hour? so many people?'. And the key thing - the mindless discussion of rather intellectual issues based on observations, deductions and analysis (okies the above statement just describes one word. hahaha)

Had my own fair share of shocks too - how i get 70+ cyclones, which grew to 200+, and upon refining, reduced to 30+, only to realise the wrong literature values were used, which after correction, ballooned to 100k+, though fortunately after removing one redundant line in the long matlab program, the numbers finally went down to a nicer 27. *phew* Okies I'm not going to go into further details, just that I'm glad I've found back the friend in Matlab. :) Must really sayang it one. haha.

I was in the same set of clothings for 2 consecutive days. Coupled with the 12pm/2pm session, today became a totally random day - okies this is a random statement that says nothing at all actually. hahaha. And er, word of the day, TAM. lol. So many things that I'm bursting with excitement to say, but still, we all know what they're all about. hahaha.

Anw, on reflecting about the whole project thing, I feel that it makes me feel complete as a student. Having heard how others have to rush assignments and projects; yet I was projectless as of last sem. it feels 'empowering' to have such kind of experience. And i quite enjoy it - the process of creating, evaluating, troubleshooting, refining without a clear answer in mind. Like my fren said, 'there's no wrong design, only bad design'. Well, one design project report down, presentation up next; and the next design project to be started! but it's our fav isn't it? I bet it's so gonna be exciting!! :D

Watch fairytale come to life

Positivity indeed does yield positive results! I mentioned that Monday is gonna be a positive day on a side note; yet it turned out to be more than positive! Wee~

It must be my LUCKY MONDAY :D

It feels like I've just read a fairytale with the characters walking out of it in real life! :D

Haha so tempting to write down what exactly happened cos it's just so exciting; but after pondering about how we chance upon this, it's better to just keep it in our head. :P I hope I don't forget what this post is about few yrs down the road. hahaha.

Keep the joy coming!

The Positive Aura

I find myself in a very joyous/happy mood recently :D Probably cos of all the positive auras around me. I think people with genuine positive attitudes can really influence others to feel the same way as them.

I think the first step is to snap out of my endless cycles of thoughts, that is, thoughts that overlap each other leading to inactions. Somehow I feel that even though I'm convinced of my argumens that goes on in my mind at a certain point of time, it always feel like a convenient excuse as an afterthought.

Also, I'm really grateful for all the little words/actions of others that really make my day. Like what I once said, I don't do things for the sake of getting those 'thanks' or recognition, but sometimes, it's demoralising to go unappreciated. What happened really makes my day. :D I'm glad that people in my course are generally nice people. It makes me overlook the sarcasm by some others from elsewhere. I can't be bothered if you can't be bothered too; and I'm just going to remember all the small kind acts. :D

On a separate side note, I think it's time to reflect upon my working attitude in a team. I think I'm too used to individual work. That's not an excuse of cos, and I'm certainly intending to change myself for the better. Shall try to find my way out and treat every opportunity as a learning experience.

On a random note, I really must release all sort of negative energy in me. I don't wanna grumble so much anymore, even though I don't really grumble alot verbally actually. I've grown to see that there's always a reason behind everything; it's just a matter of whether I see the rationale. If I don't, the problem lies with me; so at the end of the day, the thing/person that I'm unhappy with goes back to me after all. I wouldn't claim that I want to work towards being understanding wrt everything, but at least I'll try to stop looking at the negative side of things.

Monday's coming soon! Another positive day! :D

Happy 21st Birthday Eve

Great day today! Happy 21st Birthday Evelyn! :D

Had her birthday dinner @ La Mei Zi steamboat @ Bugis. Food was quite okay, though we gotta rmb to order 微辣 not 小辣 next time. It wasn't really that spicy actually, just that it exceeded my expectation of 'small spiciness' :P I kept eating the 金针菇, seafood, small noodle and mantou. lol.
And yes, it was another endless cycle of photo taking O.o It's a way of keeping ourselves entertained you see. :D

Really thankful for the invite and hence the opportunity to spend time with my 'old friends' haha. I think it's really fortunate to be able to be surrounded by your friends on a special day. :D

I'm a outside contractor!

Hmm it doesn't make sense, why is my program returning me different results when I run it at 2 different times? haha. Not to mention programming errors that appeared when it used to work; and i haven't modified anything from the last time i ran the program o.o

Anw, distracted myself with fb quizzes. haha. This is quite interesting - about alter ego. I thought I was some evil overlord the last time I did it though.

INTJ: The outside contractor

You have a solid, competent personality that may seem aloof and even arrogant, but you are typically highly skilled in any field that interests you. You are confident in
your skills and knowledge, self-assured, and imaginitive; your exceptional problem-solving skills make you an ideal architect, auto mechanic, and tool of the evil empire. While it requires the driving will to conquer of an Evil Overlord to imagine the Death Star and the evil genius of a Mad Scientist to invent its devastating weapons systems, your skill and technical prowess as an Outside Contractor is what makes the whole thing work.

You see life as a problem to be solved. For that reason, you are the person a company brings in from the outside to streamline production processes and identify redundant assets for termination. Your combination of analyticial problem-solving skills and complete and utter disregard for the morality or consequences of your actions also make you ideal for the job of hatchet man, CIA operative, and helpdesk operator.

Famous Outside Contractors include J. F. Sebastian and Sgt. Apone.

It's Bio in the air

Oh! there's open house for IBN! I so badly want to go! But it clashes with my tutorial; which is okay since I can shift it to another time. I wonder who will wanna go too! And how do i register? Didn't the person sort specified 'don't fw the mail to students', yet it came to us, so r we supposed to register as individuals? Haha anw shall try asking ard if anyone's interested in going! :D

Oh man, the positive aura about school is gaining its momentum and I'm not looking forward to the end of the semester. I know this is biazzare but duh! I never thought that I'd feel so belonged to a course/faculty/school when people are really dispersed and independent.

Some exciting news today! 2 of our nice Profs are working together (or maybe not? I cant really catch wad was being said actually) on drug delivery and it involves nanoparticles (or maybe not? Cos actually he just said it's the new phenomenon, not that they are using it). I was super excited during lecture today! :D In fact, I really really want to find out more about what are these are about! Still, I'm afraid/not used to approaching Profs/teachers. Ah.. We'll see how things go; which will emerge triump - interest/excitment or self-consciousness/shyness?

Somehow I stumped upon modules offered for next year. O.o Maybe I should take 2 electives next yr - drug delivery principles in sem 1 and enzyme tech/biochem engineering in sem 2. It's cool to know that biologics manufacturing is part of my lab next sem - eh whatever that might mean but it has the word bio in it!

Exciting isn't it?! :D

On a random note, I realise school's quite a dangerous place too so it's better to be aware of your surrounding before you speak. You never know what's round the corner, beside/behind you or behind that wall. Anyhows, I realise something about myself - I enjoy gossiping about things that don't exist. By gossiping, I don't mean taking bad about others; it's about conjuring weird and random stuff out of nowhere and deriving laughters from them. On the contrary, when some things are verified to be the truth, I cease to talk about them. I guess when it is indeed the truth, I gotta respect the things/person's privacy/rights. Is that true joy derived from fake stuff? Does its non-existent origin change the form of laughter enjoyed?

Okays keep the energy going! Feeling as excited as last sem! :D

New friends for today: Schmidt, Lewis and Sherwood. :)

NUS Matric Card

NUS Matric Card - Brings you to places you don't want to go

haha okies, it's inspired from a credit card ad; which was retardedly funny. Just for laughs..

School is a place of fun, joy and laughter! And I mean it. :D Another exciting day tomorrow, and I'm going back school on Saturday! :) Too bad it means another week is gonna be over. lol. What a deviate-from-norm response I'm having.

On a side note, I've just started writing my bio lab report and I'm totally enjoying it! Thus far, I haven't started on any literature research so everything's just plucked off my brain; and I'm glad to say that I haven't thrown my bio knowledge from JC back to my teacher. Haha and the best part is, I don't have to worry about 'standard answers' (aka exact phrasing of words) so the materials actually flow quite smoothly and the process of explaining things in my own words is great!

It's funny how things turned out this way though. I rmb in sec sch, i wasn't particularly fond of bio, and in JC, i repeatedly harboured the thought of dropping bio for H3 chem - I was so convinced that I can drop it anytime I want until I finally realise that prelims is here already. lol. Yet, after I left JC, my interest in bio suddenly just augmented. It's cool to know that chem eng isn't really all about plants and it's increasingly steered towards the biomolecule/biomedical applications.

I'm increasingly convinced that there isn't a singular right choice that can be made; it's all a matter of 天时地利人和。与其执著于那个‘对的’,不如活在当下,跟着感觉走。 The right choice can never be right if we choose not to make the choice by virtue of the fact that we're waiting for a certain mysterious right choice to come along.

A funny day that ended 'horribly'

Not really literally cos nothing that terrible really happened.

But I just had to release this horrible feeling in me. The super nice lecturer took over the tutorial slots for the first time, and out of 3 questions, 2 weren't prepared by whoever that was assigned the question. He asked around for volunteers, and all we could do is to avoid his gaze, try to keep ourselves occupied with nothing, keep silent blah blah. I really feel very very bad about this. Maybe he's really an optimistic person and isn't upset about anything; yet I think if i'm him, i'll be very demoralised. Cos he's really trying very hard to encourage people (not force nor threaten) to just come forth with a genuine smile, yet our response was so cold. Fortunately, I think by the time they reach such a position, as what my other prof once said, 'My ego doesn't depend on your responses', they won't really get affected by how students behave. It doesn't help me feel less horrible though.

I'm glad that I did the right thing, to volunteer for a question. But nonetheless, i'm still feeling quite bad for delaying the volunteering, making him go through that awkward process of silence treatment. I think I would have felt alot more worse if I had just pretended not to hear anything throughout. Still, nobody did the last remaining question, which I guess was evil of us. haix.

Ultimately, whatever he and some other profs are doing is for our own good. There's too much feedback from the industry about how withdrawn we are; so actually they're training us to speak up. What more a better place than in school? Under the guidance of an encouraging prof? After all, their lives might be made simpler if they just did all the explanation, rather than having to listen to students and attempting to understand their train of thoughts. Really, it's all for our good. Yet we don't appreciate it. At least for me, all along I can only find a thousand and one excuses to run away from participation; but what I have failed to consider is the good intention and efforts behind all these. Shall try my best to be a better student next time round; not for their sake, but my own sake. Cos I think the best way to reciprocate their goodwill is to truly grow out of my shell as a thinking individual; what they don't need is for us to change just to meet their expectations.

Hmm I guess I'm feeling that horrible cos he's really a very nice person. First prof that gave me a 100% positive impression first time I saw him (haha though for most of the rest, my impression of them improves with time). All smiles (you can feel the sincerity, not that plastered on smiles), cheerful, friendly (he doesn't talk with an overwhelming sense of authority), humble (really very. his 'arrogance' level is almost negligible as compared to his ability level), helpful, easy-going (we can call him by his name, if we choose to)... Well, you get the drift. Okies, not that all these should matter just that I really hate to exploit nice people by virtue of their niceness.

Okies, finally released the horrible feeling within me. Moving on to the more joyous part.

Woho another prof is really funny in his own ways; not that he tries to be funny intentionally.

Prof: 'A single pore' (somewhat like 'A Singapore')
*LT burst into laughter*
Prof: 'Why? What's so funny? Why are you all laughing?'
*pauses*
' You know I feel very nervous when you all laugh like this for no reason.'
*pause*
' (softly) It's really quite disturbing you know.'
*Another wave of laughter*

Since I'm on this, I'm reminded of another time when we were randomly laughing.

Prof: 'Ok, so you see this rate process.. (his head is blocking off the OHP totally hence we can't see anything)'
*after 10 sec, LT laughs*
Prof: 'What? What's so funny? *Turns to look at screen* (obviously sees no problem since he has already shifted his head away to turn to the screen)' *turns back to write his stuff* 'Okies so you see from this diagram...'
*LT laughs again*
Prof: 'What?!?! What's wrong???? (Obviously unable to see what's wrong for the same reason mentioned above)'
*LT laughs again*
Prof: 'You people ah, always laugh and laugh. Also dunno for what reason.'
*Laughs again*
Prof: '...'

Haha i'm genuinely amused by these funny statement. Makes the learning experience more fun. haha. Anyway, apart from these random funny incidents, there's something really admirable about this prof - he's sincerely out to educate us as a person to become an engineer (not those hardcore technical ones, but the softer aspects). I enjoyed the small little stories he shares with us. Also, his viewpoint of life is really worth pondering over. Maybe he belongs to the old school of thoughts, but nonetheless, the fact that it's old doesn't mean it's not worth following. Things like how we always seek to change/improve the current situation, only to realise that the old tested and tried method is still the best after all. How he feels that the ancient people does business best, via 信用, as compared to the numerous strategies and contracts now - such that it has evolved to a game of who cheats best. Really thought-provoking; some things that I might have never considered and would not be able to give an in-depth analysis anyway without the necessary experiences in life.

I think all Profs have something unique about them. It's just unlike pri/sec/jc where almost the same prescription is given throughout (false strict front, scold and force students to do hw or study etc.) Each and every one of them really have got something different. Hope to find my path and defined personality one day soon!

To end this post on a positive note, I collected my Chem eng T-shirt today! :) Designed by Dr-Neat-Handwriting :)

Back design

Front design

As usual, my style of ending a post on a random note, here's the new bag I bought in school's bazaar -.- Colour isn't my style - i prefer dark brown, but nonetheless, it serves as a good substitute for my going-to-break-apart-soon bag :)

wee~ with so many positive sources, I think I'll be able to smile more often :) The cheerful aura is influencing me! And my earpiece works great! :D

A long exciting day

wohoo~ left school at 10.30pm today. Can't believe we had project all the way from 9am - 10.30pm with breaks in between for lessons. Yes, there wasn't even proper lunch or dinner break; had to eat in front of the laptop. And my lunch was like 4.30pm?

Maybe I should start it off by saying, why wasn't there viva for bio lab? :( haha yeah the lab ended quickly, and we waited till 4+ only to be told that we can leave. I was all ready for it, cos it's dealing with bio and I'm quite excited to explain all about peptide synthesis (my internally-agreed part). oh wells! late lunch + waited 3+hr (cos there was only a TA to handle all the groups) for a 10min experiment + 1hr wait in vain for viva = a grumbling me. Anyhows, i explored the bio level quite a bit cos I was really bored and discovered some new stuff heh. Oh and I thought the posters of the research work done were really interesting, ie. tissue engineering, nanoparticle characterisation, drug delivery etc. :)

Oh yes, back to project. It was really a 'funny' experience. The few of us were trying to size our separator using Matlab. The funny thing was that, we sort of lost contact with our 'old friend' for too long, and we ended up asking silly questions like.. 'how do i create a program/function?', 'how do i get the function to output?', 'how do i call for the output of another program in this function?', 'how do i use a while/for/if loop?'. The funniest one was, 'how to get Matlab to stop'? (apparently, it was getting too busy without generating any results). So we had to google "how to force exit Matlab" and ended up screaming excitedly 'CRTL+C'!! haha, trying to act the expert by making use of the programming tool when our basics are like at the bottom of our mind. Not to mention, our lecturer for the module actually walked past us in the midst of all the 'excitements' - fortunately, we weren't exclaiming anything embarrassing then.

Oh yes, and the headache of not finding a single functional equation for calculations. The screams and exclamations of 'why is my number of cyclones so big? - 2million? 500?', 'can't be, why did you get that?', 'Oh!! my diameter is so huge!'; and as each of us try to exert our point simultaneously, it got really funny at times. hahaha.

Undoubtly, projects do bring about headaches. Yet I think the experience is really quite enriching. Designing methodology, identifying problems, refining it - really cool. :) Oh yes, it's one of my first project actually so i'm really quite amazed by the experience. haha. I quite enjoyed the stay till late night. I really quite like the school at night. :)

And it's good to have Mac to settle meals. Yet, having too much Mac could make me sick. And I haven't tried the Spicy Shaker Fries :( I'm afraid of the heatiness. haha.

My SE HPM-70 earpiece

I FINALLY got my HPM-70 :DD

Okies, I was totally disoriented this morning when I'm aware that i still haven't gotten my earpiece. Seriously, I think I'll soon find myself suffering from Obsessive-compulsive disorder O.o From wiki, "sufferers often appear paranoid and psychotic. in serious case, OCD suffers recognise their thoughts as irrational and become further distressed by this realisation". Hmmm..

By afternoon, I knew that I just so had to get the earpiece somehow! It's already 1+ and I was hungry but I insisted on going out to get it before coming home for lunch. lol.

Finally, it's mine! :D Bought from the shop that didn't come with packaging. I thought that was my best bet since the one with full package was 99% fake. Fortunately, quality was quite good and I inspected the set before purchase. Nothing suspicious - heh I think i combed almost all the forums/blogs teaching us how to differentiate the genuine from the fake.

Well done! it's gonna be a great music experience on my way to school tomolo! :D

Class Outing

Back from outing :D wow we had a toll of 9 ppl. haha.

Started off with lunch @ Super Hotdog; there were only 3 of us for lunch though. The hotdog was so-so; the fries were okay and the ice lemon tea was great! haha sat for quite some time over there. Later on went to hunt for my HPM-70 and I found that the original costs 38 with a totally different casing from the shops i've been to and online sources. O.o

Dinner @ HK cafe, which I din eat cos i tot i would be heading off after that. In the end, I went for Alice in Wonderland after all and ended up smuggling subway into the cinema. lol. Since I'm still physically in Vivo at 6pm, I might as well as go for the movie.

Alice in Wonderland
It was just so-so; probably 3/5. The whole movie felt rather flat; there wasn't much climax actually and character development was lacking. I perceive the show to be one of Alice's self-discovery; yet the way she discovered her 'muchness' wasn't that well developed actually.

My favourite character was the Hatter :D (or whichever way his name is spelt) I like his randomness, craziness, sadness in the midst of a supposedly once-cheerful disposition. It's always those people that we think are crazy that actually understands life best; maybe that's why they went crazy in the first place? Another thing is that I prefer the Red Queen to the White Queen relatively. At least she's outrightly evil and I feel a tinge of sadness and loneliness in her; she does unacceptable things which I think is due to a lack of security. On the other hand, the White Queen gives an aura of fakeness; "take care of the tree, I can't harm any living thing" etc, were actually all talks and others will carry out the actions. Put it this way, if she can kill that dragon, kill it and save her people! Why let it destroy the lands for the sake of not killing it? That's not exactly being pure and kind. lol.

Anw it got somewhat inspiring towards the end. Stand up forth, fight whatever obstacles you face, don't be afraid, voice what you really think and be determined about what you wanna do. The delivery was rather weak though.

The wittiness and philosophy behind the show was okay; probably the factor that I enjoyed most out of the show. The first sentence was rather impactful; the notion being that things are impossible only if you believe them to be so. The argument about whether she is the Alice was rather thought-provoking too; if she were the Alice of the past, then she has to be the Alice of the present (something along that line). That sort of assumes the belief in the concept of continuity, which I'm not so sure I'd commit myself to. If she din manage to recall her memories at the end, will she really be The Alice? If she had the memories, but lacked the strength now, is she still the Alice? If she weren't the Alice, but the whole world believes it to be so (perhaps even herself), then is she the Alice? There's so much ambiguity about what the Alice entails that I'm not sure if I would want to commit myself to a singular Alice concept that stands independent of time. A random point I found interesting was what the rat/something small said, "I'm not going to obey you". The next instruction was, "be off" and off it went. Contradictions; nice one. haha.

Oh yes, I feel that the Hatter was the saddest character in this show. I got this point wrong and I lack the background knowledge about what Alice in Wonderland is all about. But towards the end, when the Hatter and Alice parted, I just had this feeling that the whole thing is just a cycle over and over again. The Hatter is the one who goes through the repeated cycle of meeting and separation; whereas Alice simply could "lose her memory" and return to reality. That's just the feeling I got from seeing the Hatter; but nopes I asked around, it's not supposed to be an endless cycle. (Though I thought it might be a good way to go). The prophecy was actually an idea that I thought would be explored; yet sadly it wasn't. The notion of how can you be sure of the future which hasn't happened; if it will happen, is that really the future? I was expecting Alice to say things like 'but why am I in this scroll even though it's my first time here and why was the finale there when actually it hasn't happened yet?'

And I haven't buy my earpiece yet :( I was so excited about getting it today! :( sob sob.. That makes it a negative point today. haix. Something I had decided on firmly after pondering for so long; yet I din manage to see it through..

Run, Outing, Book

Weather's been cool these days :D I like! Makes me feel refreshed, alert and awake! Though raining limits movement, but it beats unbearably hot days.

In fact, the weather's so nice that I woke up super early today :O Went for an early run. Nice one! Basically there's no sun so it seems like I could go on running forever. Unfortunately, I had to stop due to the rain but nonetheless I insisted on finishing the 20 rounds I set for myself - the weather is too good to run any less. haha. That's ~5-6km i guess? Running's a good experience; it clears your mind, gives you a break from all the AOB stuff in life, and provides a good opportunity to think through some other stuff. Best part is that I will feel good for the rest of the day! :D

Today's gonna be a great day! Leaving for class outing soon! Been quite some time since I last saw the class. And I'm so gonna buy my HPM-70 today, that means good music experience from Monday onwards; making my bus trips enjoyable! Well, I'm gonna enjoy, recharge and prepare myself for the next week. DEADLINES. Haha okay, it ain't really that near (nor that far, 2 days from next week?); but I'm not a last-minute person, so I will always maintain this ultra paranoid attitude. lol.

On a random note, I finally have proper project to design. :D Okay what was that smile for? Hmm.. I would agree that with projects comes the chaoticness and maniac rushing trying to get things done. Yet at the same time, I think somewhat it forces us to think through what we have learnt, apply them which reinforces learning. I like the feeling of independent learning; even though admittedly I got rather overwhelmingly lost when the design problem was thrown at us just like that. Oh wells, it's all a learning experience isn't it? :D First thing I learn is to get out of google and go to library for proper literature research.

The first book I borrowed from NUS library. THE brown book. haha. Handbook of Separation Technique for Chemical Engineers. Shall find some fanciful name for it one day. It can't be our chem eng bible i guess, since I suppose that belongs to Perry's Handbook. lol! Anw, I din know how to borrow a book from the library after fiddling with that automatic machine. In the end I had to do manual borrowing from the counter -.-

Lots of fun and laughter

Ohhh finally i can post photos! We finally presented Ping with her 22nd Belated Birthday present! haha well the completed thing is all in our mind isn't it? :D

It was a great joy preparing for this! We all had so much laughter talking about stuffs, trying to remain absolutely alert to the surrounding. Not only that, we discovered a new hideout place @ E2 that's quiet and nice. Lots of joy, laughter and fun!

I wonder how my uni life will be without the 6 of us getting together. We're gonna have one less number after this sem. And another less for the next next sem. :( Oh wells, we're so gonna compile volumes of 'books' and enjoy lots of laughters over them even after graduating isn't it :D

the HPM70 experience

I had quite an interesting experience just now, putting economics into "practice". Went to bedok to check out the various pricing for hpm70 earpiece and the findings were interesting.

There were basically 3 prices - 15, 20 and 25. 25 is the obviously overpriced cos it's from a shop that always sell overpriced stuff. 20 and 15 didn't really have much of a difference. Within 15, there were shops that sold the headset in boxes; one was selling it in plastic bag (those you find in box set). Somehow I feel that I will buy from the one selling in plastic bag cos it's really fishy how the fully packaged set can be sold at such a low price. AAA grade imitation good? Whatever that looks good need not necessarily be good isn't it? And the sales girl was saying she could issue receipt for me to check against with SE shop. Is that just a claim to make it seem real; or was it a statement that can be made only because it is indeed the real thing?

Haha okies this is probably over-thinking for something so cheap and insignificant. But the experience of analysing all the various factors made the whole thing fun; and it's like economics lesson in real-life where you see price discrimination in practice. :D One shop was obviously fishy - they charged super high price for the original set, so that their fake set seems cheap (15 bucks). When i refuse to buy, he started to show leeway in price negotiation. Well, it's the very fact that I can nego which makes me not want to buy from the shop - failed strategy on me. hahaha.

Okies gonna check out real SE shop tomolo before coming to a decision. BUT i will get a SE HPM70 earpiece - i need my daily dose of music for my bus trip :D

Inspiring educator

Hmm I guess I just had to mention this; I'm very impressed with the way one of my prof is educating us. He's the second lecturer I've seen who made an effort to educate our minds beyond the academic scope, and the first one who consistently does so. Maybe it comes with age and experiences too since he knows what will really matter to us at the end of the day, whereas the other one who impressed me in this area was younger and ended up sticking to the syllabus dutifully after all.

I feel that whatever they're doing is really important to me; sharing their personal experiences, informing us of what chem eng is really about (apart from the technical knowledge) and about life in general. Makes me feel really inspired and motivated to gain more knowledge (not via hardcore swallowing of lecture notes, but truly understanding which is something that I've been trying to do all these while - which sadly like what he acknowledges too, the semester is too short for us to really think)

Slowly, I'm learning to appreciate how those people who came up with models/equations were able to do so in the first place. It's quite enriching to follow their train of thoughts and see how things make sense. One day, I shall come up with my own too! :D (and like I always say, I must think of some fanciful/funny names to go with my equation. haha. Hirschfelder; Wilke-Chang; Nusselt; Churchill and Chu :P)

I enjoy lessons with educators/teachers. We won't be able to remember all the technical stuff after we graduate (just the skills to interpretting those stuff); but these sharing sessions are the things that will be imprinted within me and which I will remember as a student and after graduation.

End of "The Illusionist" 魔幻视界!:( 赞!another great production by Wawa.

As usual, striking statements in the show (not in exact words).

人生就像一场魔术秀,你上台时时间已开始倒数。当你下台时,也不必执著于已消失的掌声。
Really, life's a fleeting moment of glory. We're in a society that forgets easily. Whatever that once shone brightly will ultimately come to an end one day. Perhaps we should fight hard not for the end, nor for the glamour/money/pride in the process; but with the start in mind. 最初的信念与执着就是人生最好的导航。

I especially liked the part about Quan Yi Feng appearing for the job interview initially. The exact replica of Ming; yet along the way, her initial passion and simple thoughts of bringing laughter to the audience 变质。At the end of the day, I think we often reflect upon our initial self, only to realise that 我和我最初的梦擦肩而过,隐隐作痛却不堪回首。

Another interesting part of the show is the many lies that are subtly revealed at the end. Eg. Shayne having James' child after all; Ming lying to Quan Yi Feng that "Queen of Magic" has won. I guess life's a delicate fabric of lies; whether it makes or breaks depends on the nature of the lie. Does Shayne really need James to come back for the child, only to lead to an awkward relationship? Does Quan Yi Feng need the truth and die with regrets, or a lie to appease herself? I think this is really an interesting topic to work on - magic and media are full of deceits in between reality; contrast them and extrapolate onto life in general.

It seems that whoever that managed to find back their initial passion end up happy; whereas those that lose themselves find themselves on a road of no return. Is that really the case?

I'm so gonna rewatch the whole series during the holidays to re-capture all the classical lines! Too good to be missed :D

Great Eps of "The Illusionist"

"The Illusionist" was great today! Really going into the climax!

Some lines that left an impression in me; not in exact words.

“我选择这条路,但过程中失去了许多,那,这条路仍然还是我当初所选择的吗?”
I guess that's what a journey is all about; you gain and lose along the way. What's more important is what you learn and how the lessons are interpretted and used in the future. If the journey entails everything that you envisioned initially, it's pointless walking this path isn't it? Put it this way, no matter how the essence of the path changes, we should all take the experience to be one of self-discovery.

“在这一行,是没有梦想的。只有傻瓜才会秉持着梦想。我曾经是快乐的傻瓜,现在却只是痛苦的傻瓜。而痛苦的傻瓜不能带给他人快乐。”
I guess it applied to anyone anywhere. I can imagine how we can enter something full of enthusiasm and hopes for the future; yet along the way, the mundane of it all, the cruelty of reality, the disheartening experiences, discovery of how what things are differs from what we think it should be etc, gradually erodes the passion we had initially. Time can reveal the different faces of truth, it can change many things too; the lighthouse that guides the way will be the point when time doesn't rule, ie. t=0. A message to myself, always return to my initial state of thoughts and mind; don't be shakened by AOB that time will show but does not matter at the end of the day, ie. t = oo.

“我才是魔术师背后的魔术师”
What's real and what's unreal? Does a lie, if told consistently and sufficiently long enough, becomes a fact? How about a truth that never ever surface, can it ever be a reality? There's multiple layers of 真真假假 in life; and really, we're all in the act. All of us.

I just see that things can 变质along the way. What we can preserve is only 最初的信念。The real question is not about why changes occur; it's about whether we can preserve what we want till the end of the journey.

My Pseudo Free Day in School

Haha i actually decided to go to school today on a pseudo-free day. It's such a joyous thing to go to school recently. Had great fun and laughters doing the stuff and "gossiping". Well, on a side note, I think some of us are getting addicted; while some others are getting irritated. I guess it's time to tone down, before it becomes a situation of 100% addiction or 100% irritation.

Oh yes, we did a bit of exploring today and what a gem of a place we found today, hidden within engin. Okies, not exactly hidden; just not a commonly explored place. The few of us needed a quiet, secluded, hidden corner today; and what a coincidence, the place that we identified turned out to be E2. To our surprise, that block belonged to chem eng too :O Along with the numerous labs we passed by. It's really quiet and serene, nice place to be at. I think we have to have a tour around engin one fine day, there's just too many hidden corners and sections - just like how our labs are hidden in some place that probably we'd never know of until the module came along.

The place where we met the undesired product. haha.

As a preview to what went on for the past few days.. That's what we do during our free time?

try to construct christmas trees (literally.. not THE christmas tree)

Ok they're actually lily for charity la. haha

I'm trying to snap out before sinking in too deeply.

An interesting sentence is "从勇气变距离 没有人能够保证 永远在一起". Been playing with this concept recently. We often talk about "Friends Forever" when we were young(er). Yet at this point in life, I just have this feeling that I never do want to include the word "forever" in whatever greetings/wishes I write/say anymore. It seems like a mockery somehow - selling a promise about the future that nobody can guarantee. Even worse still, it might disintegrate into empty talks, especially if one feels that those mere words are sufficient to represent the depth of relationships. Put it this way, even if there were no promises of forever, as long as we are able to put in sincere efforts in maintaining the present, that's all that should matter isn't it?

If we are saying things for the sake of saying it, then don't bother.

Recalling a random joke in lecture "We are engineers, we don't sell promises.. That's for the.." Anyway, I think I'm really someone who don't believe in selling promises. I seldom promise others anything actually; not that I won't fulfil them, but I believe more in seeing things through the end even without saying it explicitly, versus giving those verbal agreement every now and then. Conversely, I get quite irritated when others make promises casually and end up forgetting/breaking them.

还是...
我变成了你最想忘记的回忆...

郭美美 二人同行 [魔幻视界片尾曲]

我想过很多以后 幻想过快乐也愉悦心痛...

"The Illusionist" is a great show, another great work from the producers of "Perfect Cut". Especially liked Episode 7: Misdirection.

Useful Mac/Fox

Oh man, suddenly I feel that the Macdonald/Fox Fluid Mech tb is so useful! hahaha. Anw, my record for analysing data has increased to 12 column x 117 rows! And that's just my first sheet of data on excel - there's 2 more. That's inclusive of just numbers, and not the numerous graphs that I'm seeing now! wohoo~ Actually it's really quite fun. I must be going mad! Haha I think I'm in a very joyous mood recently; must be because of all the jokes in school. :D

Completed @ 3pm. Record: 12 columns x 132 rows; 19 columns x 48 rows!

Back to civilisation

Finally, declaration of end of mid-terms! :D It was quite 'hilarious' today at EA. haha. Anyway, I myself also thought that EA could house all of us (was trying to assure some of my frens confidently too). Hmm seems like sometimes, we really can't be too sure of certain things. Lesson learnt, don't assume nor be overly confident (of the assumption).

The 6 of us went out for a relaxing outing afterwards; finally back to civilisation after *i lost count of how long*. haha no la just exaggeration :P headed down to orchard. took some photos on the bus - the passengers must be like ?!? the tourists are so enthusiastic siah!

Had good food today :D Shokudo and the Desert Shop @ Hereens. Both fantastic. I think Shokudo has one of the best quality Jap food for the price range. Two visits there returned positive responses. Had the Udon set, which comes with Salmon Sushi too. Nice! The soup base was very mushroom-y; I like! There's tempura and half-cooked egg. Great!

After that, it was another session of photo-taking. haha some of us were trying to re-enact those good old days of taking class photos (when you had to cross your legs). I guess it's the post-exam aura; we were trying to decide if the water was turbulent and laminar. hahaha i guess laminar isn't it? There's even a "boundary layer" (not to be taken in its literal definition) with a dome-shape haha.

Had desert @ the Desert Shop. Or what's its name again? Everything was great, except for what i ordered o.o Next time i must try the Green Tea Ice Shavings with Red Bean. Tasted terrific! As for mine, milk beancurd, which was literally milk. very dry and not very smooth :(

Spent some time after that @ Kino, in search of inspirations. hahaha we ended up looking at random stuff. And i found nanotech/nanosci books, which were interesting! Maybe cos they weren't too technical. Anw was guilty about browsing the books cos it's not a library so i quickly placed it back on the bookshelf after flipping 2 pages. Could have read on, really nice! The weird thing was, we spent the rest of the day @ Taka moving up and down from 5th floor all the way to basement. Okies, there was a gem of a place over there with lots of handicraft stuff and the price looks good too. :D Great shall spend some time digging for treasures over there next time :D In the end, after getting what we needed, we went back to Kino in search for.. Stickers! we're really going to places for random reasons siah.

Finally our dinner was @ KFC! Haven't had it for quite some time. And my banditto pocket. Something that I so badly wanted for so long! wee~ Had great laughs over dinner (and whole shopping trip actually) keep the gossips coming man! Or rather brainstorm for more gossips! I still find it funny how we can conjure gossips out of nothing and laugh over there; but nonetheless, just laugh at it; there's no justification of why or how! haha. I'm sure the surprise will be great! :D

8th week

8 weeks gone just like that. There goes my weekly dosage of laughters! :( It's nice to know that we haven't forgotten to show our gratitude by giving a warm round of applause :) It leaves me to wonder what happened 2 weeks before though.

但八个星期总和八天不一样。

Anyway, something interesting happened in tutorial today. Or rather, I went into class way before my tutorial slot (i tot the class was empty and i cant find any other seats outside). Overheard a student complaining to the tutor about the mid-terms. Personally, I felt that the mid-terms was well-set and forces us to think over the topic more deeply. Yet the argument I heard was that, he knows alot, but the questions were set in such a way that it doesn't really test what he knows and once he's careless, he gets it wrong!

Okies, I must admit that I once felt very bitter about losing marks due to carelessness, especially if it's MCQ cos you simply lose it all even though you know what's going on. But I've since moved on, and acknowledge the fact that carelessness is also another aspect that should be penalised actually. After all, who knows what you know and what you are careless in? Or rather, put it this way, next time when we enter the workforce, and something wrong is designed due to some carelessness, nobody's gonna accept you for your ability but will be quick to criticise you based on that mistake. A mistake is a mistake and being careful is also an integral part of the training.

Lol anyway, that's besides the point. I just find it quite interesting how we can always find some reasons to attribute blame for our own lack. How we can always try to justify what went wrong, rather than really looking into why things went wrong.

Moving back to the point about carelessness, I think I've come to the point where I'm truly convinced that it's more important to be clear and correct in concepts; rather than grumbling over the loss of marks/credits for carelessness. That being said, I also believe that once I'm careless, it simply emphasizes on the need to be careful. With this point in mind, it simply highlights the merits of going slower, but with a disproportionately greater quality of thoughts. :D

几天前想说已经淡忘了。
几天后的今天又不确定了。

Decision and Laughters

Ok I've made my choice, now it's time to wait and see what is their choice.

Took me a day to arrive at this decision. Did wanted to drag on till the end of this week, but later on, I found that it'd be rather pointless. After all, I have a feeling that I'd go round in circles, only to end up convincing myself of a choice that I didn't really want. Better to get it done and over with in a swift decision isn't it? :D

Hopefully I'll get a response soon and then I can start on my Plan B and maybe even Plan C. lol!

Anyway, today's a really funny day for some of us. This is such a fun sem, when the few of us found new sources of joy to keep ourselves entertained. It's really brainless and silly actually, but nvm it's just for laughs and laughter's good for health isn't it? (what a warped reasoning. hahaha) I think at the end of the day, we'd all grow to become super alert people. HAHA! and somehow, we were able to reason out today that whatever we're doing has basis in science too - First, we have to make observations, carry out analysis, make assumptions, from there, conclude something. There's even things like "experimental steps" (how to collect the necessary "data" we want) and "safety precautions" (HAHAHA! we displayed it well today :D). Well, we always need funny distractions in life; it's just a matter of whether they're real distractions, or conjured distractions just for self-entertainment, isn't it? WAHAHA :D

On a random note, VivaZ is out officially in Singapore! $798 (w/o contract) along with Xperia Pureness (who will buy this phone actually?!). wee~ Sort of changing my target of X10 mini to this VIVAz phone; or maybe E72. IT show's here and I feel like getting a laserjet actually. Samsung? HP? Shall hop down one day :D

Confidence

I suppose it is necessary to feel/be confident at the right occasion.

It's weird how others have to persuade me that I'm up to the job when it should be the other way round. Really biazzare and I'm not intending to depend solely on such lucky encounters in the future.

When it's time to rise to the occasion, it ain't time to remain humble, or rather, to retreat to the safe comfort zone. It should be the time when I step up to the job, give it my best shot, so as to produce a result that meets expectation and satisfies everyone. It's pointless feeling unsure, give a substandard effort, having everyone else to encourage you, only to withdraw after all.

The point is, give it my best shot and quit worrying so much.

And on a random note, did i mention about how I should stop thinking so much? Yes, I really think so.

Story

I believe that everyone has a story behind them.

Whether or not we are convinced by them, or even if we perceive the story to be an excuse; like it or not, it's their story.

Whereas we cannot emphathize with everyone all the time, nor should we attempt to understand actually (read as, think that we are really able to understand their plight at all times; cos if we don't, the statement 'I understand' is but a mere mockery); the least we can do is to listen to them. Listen sincerely and throw all judgements out of the mind. Sometimes, that's all that's required of us; but often, that's something that we're stingy with.

On a separate note, sometimes things are really so contradictory. Sometimes, we do things not for the sake of getting the recognition. Yet at other times, it gets demoralising to see our efforts go unappreciated. Nonetheless, what is being sought after ain't words of praises or anything of that sort either. Weird isn't it? Not searching for or expecting anything explicit, yet the implicitness of any sort (if any) often leaves behind a vacuum of emotions. Maybe the best phrase to sum this up is that, the feeling of being taken for granted is horrible. Still, perhaps at the end of the day, nobody is taken for granted after all as everyone's silently appreciating everything. It's just like how people that I really appreciate will never know about this, unless they (1) happen to chance upon this blog and (2) be able to decipher what I'm saying or (3) overhear me somehow. (1) + (2) & (3) have equally low possibility. Well, I guess the world is a patchwork of guesswork; it's a matter of whether it's uglier or more beautiful that what we thought it is.

Over-thinking

I seriously feel that I'm always thinking too much and giving too much considerations to things that didn't matter. Maybe I should start doing things based on what I want or feel, rather than trying to anticipate what others are expecting/reacting. (I don't intend for this to translate to being inconsiderate, just to stop over-thinking about stuff.) After all, often than not, I wouldn't know what's going on on others' mind; at other times, whatever that I'm concerned with might just seem like a joke to them. At the end of the day, the conclusion arrived after giving things so much deliberate turns out rather wrong. Especially since I don't bother explaining how I arrive at this seemingly -.- conclusion.

I guess, that's it.. Sometimes we just need to be frank with our opinions, and when everyone's frank about stuff, things will work out somehow when we all talk it out. That should be better than everyone trying second guess every other things and we all end up doing/saying stuff that totally misses everyone's point.

A simple random and totally-besides-the-point example. When I'm trying to cross the road.. Let's say I missed the green man by a few seconds, I will feel super guilty pressing the button again to make it green again. Cos I will think that the cars will have to stop barely a few seconds after the previous batch was stopped. It's as though I'm delaying them. But the thing is, whoever cares about such stuff in reality? If you need to cross the road, just press the button, get the green man, the cars will stop for you and you just walk over to the other side. Something that simple yet I gotta think so much. Duh!

Don't try to think like 'others' if i'm not 'others'.

Joke of the Day

Joke of the day from workshop attended. In an interview where the speaker was the interviewer.

Q: "What is a problem in Singapore?"
A: "Yes it is."

Q: "What is a problem in Singapore!?"
A: "Yes it is."

Q: "What is a problem in Singapore!?!?!?!"
A: "Yes it is."

Q: "What did you think my question was to answer in this way?"
A: "Water is a problem in Singapore."

The funniest part was that, the speaker was so amused upon recalling this experience that he can't help but to laugh as he conveyed this joke. hahaha.

A mini break

4 out of 5 mid terms cleared :D Now a tiny mini break in between. ~

Since half of my math econs syllabus is already cleared, ie. it won't appear for finals, I shall give it a mini conclusion now. hahaha. It's all about optimisation! Basically, I see old stuff from 1505 (differentiation, multivariable differentiation, L'Hopital - don't we just like this?, etc) and on top of that, new (and actually useful things) eg. Envelop Theorem, Lagrange multiplier, Kuhn Tucker conditions (especially liked the multi-constraint KT cos it's really fun to figure out the contradictions. unfortunately, the lecturer mentioned that it won't appear for the module exam, neither will it be used in honours years - only if you go for graduate studies -.-) So all in all, I'm pleased with the new skills learnt towards the end of the first half of this module :D Looking forward to the Game Theory lecture series (read as just 2 lectures).

Also, I'm beginning to see what chem eng is all about now. I'm quite glad actually that the modules appear more integrated now, that is, you might need knowledge from other modules to understand a particular module. It makes the overall picture clearer. I rmb when I was in Year 1, everything seemed disjoint to me, particularly for Sem 1, which was like a repeat telecast of JC life. Anw, my fav 'hang-out' place this sem is the chem eng com lab (got air con!) and I always overhear seniors' discussions for design project/FYP. It's really cool how they can just shoot process abbreviation/some chemical stuff offhand and analyse pros and cons as though it's something so natural. Actually it's quite scary too, but nonetheless, I wonder if I can be like this towards my upper years of studies - to be so familiarised with the terminology and methodology, and most importantly, to be able to give critical analysis of situations. :D

Game Theory

I finally got my first set of notes on Game Theory! :D It's my favourite topic in econs though i haven't really officially learnt about it. How unfated can I get with this topic? At lvl 2000 micro, it was supposed to be in syllabus, but was unfortunately taken out that very sem I took the module. At lvl 3000 micro, it should form the bulk of the materials; yet for some unknown reason, there's only a set of notes about it and till now, we're still on consumer theory. Took mathematical econs in the hope of getting game theory; fortunately, it's in the syllabus but it comes with 11 weeks of doing other stuff like differentiation, integration and DE. hahaha but alas, I can finally get a glimpse of what's it all about! And I'm so gonna appeal for the game theory module next time - it's so funny how i'm don't meet pre-requisite requirement when I'm expected to do the higher level version of that pre-requisite module O.o

Since I'm on this topic, I think life's really a Game Theory. Sometimes you want to get things done, but others know that you are that type of people; somehow things will get done, that is, you will get all things done. Should I consider that to be a Nash equilibrium? hahaha. Anyway, till now I still believe that it's more efficient to just do it rather than think about the issue of why even though this is the very thought that will direct work back. Ah, prisoner's dilemma - the beauty of it all.

On a random note, since i'm printing my notes now - I bet my tutors wonder how I am able to read the small fonts. I still rmb one of them go, "huh? what's that over there?" hahahaha
