Random Joke

Am reading my econometrics stuff, and came across this "graduation joke".

"A university's secret of success is to admit talented students and then make sure that the faculty stays out of their way and does as little damage as possible."

Lol.

Anyway, I think that I'm lacking inspirations for blogging recently. =X

Gotten used to getting use to

习惯就好 习惯就好
一个人在夜里继续地奔跑
却发现再也听不到自己的心跳
我承认我的伪装是真的不够好

We just need to get used to changes and adjust/adapt to it. True enough, that's how we've been living through our lives all these while. Repeat the cycle often enough and soon, all that's left is a zombified body. Maybe we've never really gotten used to anything; it's just the process of distancing ourselves from the change and alienating the me from the self that gives the illusion that sooner or later, everything will be fine. What we've gotten used to is getting used to itself, irrespective of what we have to get used to.

A random thought, as usual. It's okay.

Polarised gift

My experiences with birthdays this year is very polarized.

At one end, I gave/shared DIY gifts to my friends; at the other end, I have chipped in for branded (okay, quite..) goods as gift.

Just an interesting observation. lol.

Full of random stuff

Random fact of the day: It's Happy 50th Anniversary to lasers (Light amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) ! It used to be just part of sci-fi until the high-intensity light source was finally developed at California's Hughes Research Lab. It started off as just a light beam, later it was used for surgery purposes (carbon dioxide laser), aesthetics, cd/dvd, telecommunications purposes. Now, the thing that amazes me is that, actually to me laser is just like yet-another-thing in my life which I hadn't exactly paid much notice to. Nonetheless, it's everywhere serving us. But, back then, it was just part of sci-fi; something which even scientists dismissed as mere 'solution looking for problem'. So that's science, the power of creating (or discovering) something impossible. I like..

End of first week (or rather 3 days) of work. On a rather positive note too! I'm so gonna look forward to work and hopefully, I'm able to deliver whatever I claimed I will be doing. Honestly speaking, I really do quite like the environment over there. Too bad it's not really my main interest which is more of nano/bio. And anyway, they don't need chem engineers too. haha.

Exciting weekend ahead! BBQ with uni frens coming up soon. It's a pity I couldn't be actively involved in the planning since I'm at work. :(

Anyway, I think some weird habits ought to disappear from view, or at least be hidden away from public knowledge. Though it's a repeated statement, but yes, it's time to become normal. hahaha. And also to stop drop fish when I know I ain't giving the cat away. Actually, I'm still of opinion that unsaid things are most exciting. Explicity greatly decreases the fun of it all.

Just a random thought

And that was the end of my second last paper. It's freedom for most people and I'm counting down to mine too!

Anyway, I randomly visited a blog that I had long time ago (which didn't contain much stuff). Hmm, I can't believe that was me back then; I've always believed that my style of blogging was rather consistent. Oh wells, another evidence of choosing to believe in what we want to believe in, that is, until the truth reveals. The similarity is that, I've always been talking in a cryptic manner, just that, I couldn't exactly decipher what I meant back then. Probably I do have an idea, but I ain't sure if they correspond exactly to the respective incidents back then. :O I wonder if maybe at the end of my uni life, when I look back at the past 4 or 4.5years, will I be able to interpret what I was saying all along?

Was randomly thinking if I should..

1) Grab a convenient opportunity laid nicely in front of me just to gain the experience.
2) Fight for what I'm really interested in, in spite of the need to source for everything from scratch.

Throughout my life, I think I've been living it the #1 way. That's before I realised where my area of interest lie in. Now, I think I know or maybe I should say, before truly experiencing it, I wouldn't know if that's the path that's suitable for me. Recently, I've grown to be slightly more radical (at least to myself, I observe that slight change. and i don't mean very radical la.) and actually, I really want to try to fight for what I think I want, in spite of the mess and blunders I might land myself in. I dunno what I'll regret more - landing myself into akward situations thereafter, or not even bothering to fight in the first place. Lol, why do I make it sound as though there'll be regrets either way I go? Maybe things will turn out just fine.

And so, back I go to my econs! Game theory! Optimal Control! DE/Integration/Financial econs. wohoo~

It's random

Hmmm, I was at my friend's blog, which was playing a certain song. And, the radio happened to be playing that too. Is that.. coincidence or just plain weird and creepy? lol.

Anyways, I almost wanted to say tomolo is the end of exams when I recalled my last paper is on Friday. lol. Anyway, nonetheless, the end is nearing and it feels.. weird. Shall lunch in school for the next 2 days I think, before I bid NUS goodbye for 3 months.

3 weeks came and went; another 3 weeks came and is about to be gone. That's 6 weeks in total, yet it feels like yesterday (as clinche as it might sound). Still, I'm quite excited about my holiday! Hope it's gonna be an eventful one, shall see how things go tomolo. For now, back to HMT! :D

[edited 5.45pm] and the radio continues to play song.

Mixed flow = no concept of time

Just a sudden thought that I like ideal mixed flow reactors, ie. CSTR/PRF.

Why? Cos there's no concept of time.

Well, at least no concept of absolute time (which I still think is relative but nvm).

I wonder where else will time find no meaning.

It's random

:O Oh this is random. The econs department and alumni is sponsering me to go for the econs D&D? It's a complimentary ticket! Anyone wants to go with me? There's a need to pay for the other tickets though, but at a discounted rate.

Come on, think think think! Drug delivery. Modelling. I keep telling myself, as engineers, I'm sure we're able to think and come up with something. Morphine? Insulin? Drug for restenosis? Diffusion? Bulk motion? Semi-infinite?

Edited: Wee~ Maybe transdermal drug delivery is the way to go! Essentially still drug delivery! Shall see how my group mates feel about this! :D Still, I hope to solve the 'morphine in blood stream' problem someday soon.

By the way...

This thought randomly flashed across my mind. There's always this tinge of sadness whenever I hear older Profs make a comment, only to add that..

'By the way, the friend I was talking about is still alive.'
-or-
'He's still alive the last I know of him.'

Probably having lived through more than half a century, they're well-poised to handle such situations and have already 看透人生。But as someone who has only lived through two decades, it just seems... weird. And my imagination runs wild.

Back from CNY shopping

back from impromptu and rather last minute CNY shopping.

and i finally got myself a canvas shoe. lol after finishing 2 labs already that is. oh wells, there's still 4 more to go; many more to come in future 2 lab modules and 8-turned-90-degree visits to labs for FYP. so.. still a worthy investment and I can finally stop wearing my old and tattered sports shoe to school. lol!

bought a pair of pumps, which actually wasn't part of my plan (long story) and 2 tops. Hmm they're rather dull though; hope that others are okay with it. but most importantly, since im ok with it, i guess the rest shouldn't matter. tt's actually what i learnt today from my shopping trip - to voice out my opinion as it is before it's too late, otherwise more has to be done to revert back to how things would have been had I not kept silent initially. It's like taking addition steps to reach the same end point.

which randomly reminds me of what one of my lecturer said.. In dancing, you take 3 steps forward, and 2 steps backwards. to me, it's equivalent to taking 1 step forward, that's all. lol. And a random thought that i have now is that, I can dance too even when im on my chair typing this out; cos there is the possibility of numerous permutations of dance steps that I potentially could have executed with the start and end point being my seat :D okies, random - as usual.

Random thoughts and endless ramblings

It's sweet to see how people can congregate together.
Yet it's bitter to realise that these bonds are fragile.
Just remember to handle with care.

When you think that others' are not producing the quality work that matches your expectations,
there's really no point complaining about anything.
Either you correct them, or you just have to put in more effort to get what you want.
Nobody's anyone's slave - we don't live for others.
There's no necessity for one to live under others' expectations; neither is it reasonable to expect others to live by your expectations.
The only thing we can correct is ourselves.

Some things get really pointless after a while.
Even though rigour of thoughts is required when processing information from scratch,
it seems that the overwhelming phenomenon is that shortcuts are aplenty.
Sure, you learn less by taking the easy way out.
But the very phenomenon of such occurrence gives us an important lesson to life,
that is, life might be a mere cascade of lies.
To brave the rough path and gain intangible experience yet not being rewarded appropriately,
or to walk the smooth path and emerge victorious after all?
It's really a personal preference with no value judgement attached.
After all, it's just a matter of who cheats best in the game of deceit.
Just remember, as with all lies, the ends achieved by such methods usually do not mean a thing at the end of the day.
Really, it doesn't matter at the end of the day.

What did I say about learning to be slow and steady?
It ain't time to panic yet.
Continue to enjoy at the desired pace.

Kopi tad tio bing

Heard one of the funniest phrase used in coffeeshop.

“Kopi 踢/塞到冰” (in hokkein)

I suppose it means ice coffee. But isn't it easier to say Kopi Bing? Why Kopi tad tio bing? :O

Corrie-

Chanced upon this short article on people's behaviour when they meet in corridors. Rather interesting and true.

Corriearklet: Recognise each other from the ends of the corridors but immediately pretend they haven't.
Corriedoo: Aware of each others' presence from afar but fakes sudden recognition only when they're near each other.
Corrievorrie: Gotta maintain a smile/wave for the length of time they see each other until they finally reach the end and heaves a sigh of relief.
Corriecravie: Both sees each other but pretend to be doing something else and hence did not notice each other.
Corriemoillie: Both makes a move of recognition far too early and realise that there's still a long way of akwardness to go.
Corriemuchloch: People who make a mess of even task such as walking down the corridor.

Murphy's Law

"Murphy's Law: Whatever can go wrong, will go wrong."

Why does murphy's law always work?
1) We percieve what we want to perceive
2) Interpret the information by our own standard
3) Possess skewed memories
4) Establishes causal relationship loosely
5) Affected emotionally
6) We're subjected to pressure of society

As such, anything that's only slightly negative gets blown out of proportion, stored in memory, gets linked to bad luck and results in the self-fulfilling prophecy of Murphy's Law.

Can the only exception to Murphy's Law be Murphy's Law itself?

it's org chem

Been "chiong org chem" days recently. Just feeling random suddenly.

Borrowed the Rankine Engine TS diagram (Though I believe this is a vapour-compression refrigeration. okies doesn't matter). It seems that the endless permutation of possibilities in org chem is making us go from 1 --> 4, where the information is being pumped into our memory. Along the way, we pass through the saturation line (green) and our brains become overheated (superheated vapour). Finally, when state 1 is reached, we realise that we've been under too high a pressure. During exams, we move from 1 --> 2; PT doesn't change but info is converted from one form to another. At the end of exams, we go from state 2 --> 3 - the cool down period to low pressure level without a change of energy state (which has been converted from anxiety to excitement). Well, 3 --> 4 can represent the 13 weeks of school then - getting heated up but nowhere near saturation nor high T/P. :D

I recall a scene from 雀圣 (I think..) where 郭晋安 was trying to cultivate friendship with his tiles so that his "friends" will appear whenever he wants them to. Lol we should all be friends with our "tools" so that they can come easily during exams. "DBN, DBU, DMSO, NBS, -OC(CH3)3, R-MgX, LiR2Cu, TsOH, pyridine, Ph3P=CR2, etc. Come o come!"

Random thought

Just a random thought. [as usual...]

Given an ultra-common hypothetical case: Suppose A and B both falls into the river at the same time, who will you save?
My immediate answer: I can't swim, so i can't save.
Assume: I can definitely save 1 person?
Next answer: Will think over who to save, but cannot decide. until the moment when both drowns, a decision has yet to be made.

Is not doing anything to avoid a wrong better than doing a right when u know that a wrong almost definitely accompanies that decision?

Or is that another form of escapism?

[Edited 11.09am] !_! I just realised that the "label" below the blog spot allows me to categorise my blog post!! :D Was hoping to get this kind of tags but never ever figured out how to do it.
